Professional PAT Testing in Milton Keynes
PAT testing is the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. It checks that portable appliances in your workplace stay in good working order. Our experienced PAT engineer carries out a formal visual inspection of each appliance, then runs electrical safety tests. Depending on the item, these include earth continuity, insulation resistance and polarity checks.
Every test follows the IET Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.
Why PAT Testing Matters for Compliance
• Legal responsibility:
The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require employers to maintain electrical equipment safely. • No fixed testing interval: UK law does not specifically require annual PAT testing.
• No fixed testing interval:
UK law does not specifically require annual PAT testing. Inspection and testing frequency depends on risk.
• Evidence of compliance:
Documented inspections, appropriate testing and maintenance records help demonstrate that electrical safety responsibilities are being met.
• Insurance protection:
Insurers may request evidence of electrical maintenance following a claim. Up-to-date PAT testing records can provide useful supporting evidence.

PAT Testing for Every Sector in Milton Keynes
Landlords and Rental Properties
PAT testing for landlords isn’t a legal requirement in England, but you must make sure any appliances you supply are safe. A certificate for each rental property is the simplest proof of that, and some HMO licences require one.
Schools, Colleges and Universities
We carry out PAT testing for schools, colleges and universities during holidays or after hours. That covers classroom IT, science and design technology equipment, staffroom appliances, and student chargers in halls.
Hotels, Restaurants and Hospitality
Kettles, hairdryers and irons in hotel rooms, and microwaves and food mixers in busy kitchens, take constant wear. PAT testing for hospitality venues should reflect that heavier use, so we usually set shorter retest intervals for them. We work around service so guests and diners aren’t affected.
Care Homes

Beauty Salons
Hairdryers, straighteners, wax heaters and nail lamps are handled all day, which wears out their cables and plugs. Regular PAT testing for beauty salons catches that damage early.
Laboratories
For laboratories, we agree a schedule with your lab manager beforehand so no running experiment or sensitive instrument is interrupted.
Businesses, Offices and Homeworkers
Commercial PAT testing for offices, shops and other businesses of any size. Employers are also responsible for equipment they provide to staff who work from home, so we can test homeworkers’ laptops and chargers too.
Industrial, Warehouse and Construction Site PAT Testing
Industrial PAT testing covers power tools, battery chargers and warehouse equipment. Construction site PAT testing needs the shortest intervals of all, often every three months for 110V tools, because site conditions are harsh.
One local engineer, plain-English reports, and no hidden extras.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
No law requires PAT testing by name. Employers must, however, maintain electrical equipment under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. Regular inspection and testing is the standard way to show you’ve done so.
How often should appliances be tested?
It depends on the risk. Low-risk office equipment may need testing only every few years. Construction-site tools can need checking as often as every three months. We’ll recommend intervals based on our assessment.
How much does PAT testing cost?
We charge a rate per appliance, with lower rates for larger volumes. Tell us roughly how many items you have and we’ll send a fixed quote.
Will testing disrupt my business?
Very little. Each item takes a few minutes, and we can work early, late or at weekends. We’ll agree a time to test computers and other IT equipment so nobody loses work.
What happens if an appliance fails?
The appliance is labelled as failed and taken out of use. We’ll fix it there and then if it’s safe to do so, or tell you whether it needs to be repaired or replaced.
Do you test equipment in student accommodation?
Yes. We test furnished appliances and students’ own items in halls and shared houses, usually between terms so residents aren’t disturbed.
What qualifications do your engineers hold?
Our engineers hold the City & Guilds 2377 qualification in in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. They are fully insured and use calibrated testing instruments.
